It's 10:15pm on a Saturday night. I'm in bed thinking about tomorrows ride. I work Saturdays tattooing so Sunday is my first real opportunity of the weekend to ride.
Recently we have been trying to make the most of the colder months and the inevitable poor weather that they bring with them by going off-road. Tomorrow's ride is no exception and we will travel down from Melbourne to the Otways behind Lorne for some gravel roads and 4WD tracks. Ray and I have done this ride a few times now but first timers Ben, Troy and Ariel will be joining us with a mix of mountain and CX bikes.
Anyway, it's got me thinking about why we ride?
For me it's a combination of a desire to stay fit, to wear the kits we spend so much time creating, spending time with like minded people and maybe most importantly it's an escape. Don't get me wrong, I love my life but working as an artist and running an online business means my days can be consumed by social media, websites and emails in the endless race to create something that allows us to keep doing what we love. Riding my bike in some of the worlds' most picturesque locations gives my mind time to just switch off, even if it's just for a few minutes.
I have to constantly remind myself to sometimes just stop and take in the sunrise or the crisp morning air in the Kiewa Valley. I get this same release when I'm mid tattoo and I am truly in the moment.
No-one asked but to answer the question, I ride because in a way it keeps me going. If I couldn't just get on my bike some days and ride I'd slowly lose my mind.
It's now 11:23 pm and I'm listening to Ryan Adams New York, New York. I feel like I've put into words what I had in my head so fingers crossed the weather is good tomorrow and I don't get dropped!
