Red Hook Crit 2016

In April 2015 Hal was in New York and got to see the Red Hook Crit with some local riders.  It's a huge event that celebrates crit racing on track bikes and is getting bigger every year.  The upshot was that Hal came back to Melbourne and set his sights on racing in the 2016 edition. Oh, and he forced his brother Ray to race as well.

If you are not familiar with the event, here's how it works:

  • 226 men and 50 women riders enter from all over the world
  • Track bikes only - fixed wheel and no brakes
  • 10 turns with 2 hairpins on a 1.2km course around the car park at the Red Hook Container Terminal in Brooklyn NY
  • 6 qualification groups for men with the 85 best times automatically going through to the final
  • The next 50 best times fight it out in the Last Chance race over 15 laps and the top 10 go through to the final
  • There is also a 5k mens and womens run event held before the finals
  • Finals for mens and womens are held at night under lights

This years event was held on a perfect spring day in New York with the sparkling harbour and the Statue of Liberty a back drop for the racing.

For the record Hal and Ray qualified in 108th and 143rd places respectively and made it through to the Last Chance race.

They held on for as long as they could but after sitting in the front group for the first half of the race, Hal couldn't hold the wheels and the gap started to open up.  Ray worked hard in a group that settled about half a lap off the pace before the moto eventually passed them and they had to leave the track.

If you have seen any of the footage on youtube you will know there was carnage in both finals so while Hal and Ray were disappointed not to do better I am sure there was some relief at not being involved in all that damage.

Win, lose or draw, the Red Hook Crit is an amazing event.  We were stoked to be part of it for 2016 and to meet so many great riders and fans of riding.  There's no doubt we will be back in 2017 to have another crack.

Thanks New York - we had a blast.
